Prince Harry visits minefields in Mozambique

The HALO Trust is the world’s largest humanitarian demining agency and a charitable partner of GreaterGood.org.  On June 21, HALO hosted HRH Prince Henry of Wales on a minefield visit in Mozambique. The Prince experienced firsthand the devastating and lasting effect landmines have on people, young and old.

Photo courtesy of The Halo TrustGreat Britain's Prince Harry traveled to Tete Province where he observed HALO deminers working at the Nhamchenje Minefield, an eleven mile mine belt laid by the Portuguese in 1972 to protect the Cahora Bassa Dam. Although these mines placed there thirty years ago, they continue to have a devastating impact on the ten villages that straddle this unfenced mine belt. Families are forced to live within close proximity of an estimated 30,000 mines, preventing farmers from planting crops and safely grazing livestock.

During the Prince's visit, HALO was clearing a half mile stretch of minefield next to the village. HALO started clearance in November 2009 and has removed almost 2,000 mines at Nhamchenje. Since launching its program in Mozambique in 1993, HALO has located and destroyed more than 105,000 mines. HALO is focused on finishing clearance of the remaining minefields in Mozambique, an undertaking that could—with adequate funding—be finished in as little as four years.

The Prince spoke to two surviving amputees, a boy named Delisso and an elderly man named Senhor Graciano. Delisso lost his leg in November 2008 while herding his father’s cattle, and Senhor Graciano lost his arm and his vision in his mine accident. There have been 48 other human accidents, as well as numerous cattle accidents in this area.

The terrible human impact of landmines, and the important work of The HALO Trust, was brought to the world’s attention by Diana, Princess of Wales, when she visited minefields in Angola in 1997. The Prince follows his mother’s example and supports The HALO Trust in its mission. To learn more about The Halo Trust’s work in Mozambique, please click here.
