Most would agree that sites like Craiglist are affordable and easy to use. But it's also understood that there's a certain amount of risk involved whenever you sell or purchase on the site. Nowhere is this fact more worrisome than in the "free," "wanted," and "farm & garden" categories, where animals are bought and sold. A loophole in the Craigslist terms of use means the only requirement one must meet in order to deal in animals is to list a rehoming fee.

This lax approach leads to a multitude of extremely serious issues. Backyard breeders trading in sickly animals appear reputable to the unsuspecting eye. Unvetted adopters take animals into their homes under false pretenses, often for heartbreaking purposes such as dog fighting and torture. Pet flippers who adopt pets for low fees from shelters sell the animals to the highest bidder. The list goes on and on, but Craigslist's terms of use in relation to animals must not.

Their terms of use need to change. Craigslist must absolutely and without exception ban any and all buying, selling, and giving away of animals on their site. Not tomorrow or the next day. But now.

Dear Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist,

I am concerned about the animals who are bought, sold, and given away on your site. The requirement that a "rehoming fee" be charged in all of the above is unfortunately nothing more than a very ineffective hoop that disreputable individuals easily jump through in order to participate in what often amounts to criminal behavior.

In a recent Indianapolis Star article, a young woman's dog went missing, only to be found days later on your site, advertised for sale. Though this case ended in the woman and dog being reunited, thanks to police involvement, the majority of similar stories do not have such happy outcomes.

It's in your power to protect both the users of your site and the innocent animals who are traded every day. Reconsider your terms of use and stop the buying, selling, and giving away of animals on Craigslist.

Respectfully,

Jun 19, 2018 (Name not displayed) old people like myself who are looking for a pet can not afford a dog that needs a home because craigslist allows anyone to ask 200-2000 for a dog. This is not re-homing, this making money of the life of a innocent animal
