Skeeter was hit by a car that broke her back and when her owners found out she could no longer walk on her back legs, they left her at my vets without paying their bill. She was such a sweetie, my vet kept her and made her a doggie wheelchair. I babysat her one weekend for him and when he came to pick her up I asked, "Can she stay a little longer?" Skeeter ended up staying with me nine years until congestive heart failure took her. We gave up the wheelchair because she could scoot on her back legs and went so fast I had to run to catch her! I did have to manually make her go to the bathroom, but living in northern Minnesota, it was great not having to go outside ! Because of her handicap, we developed an extremely close bond and she truly was like a child to me. Caring for Skeeter meant coming straight home from work and really making plans in advance, but it was so worth it. I considered it an absolute honor to have her love me and trust me enough to care for her. She's been gone a couple of years now, but I still tear up just thinking about the wonderful time we shared together. She never let her handicap hold her back from anything - especially love.
