Lyric arrived at my screen door one warm summer night, a seven month old orange and white ball of energy. I opened the door, he walked in and never left. He loved to be outside and would be outside whenever he could. One evening in late winter about a year later, a scrawny and matted black cat was at the door. I went over to the door and the cat took off running. I wondered if I would ever see him again.
We didn’t have much snow that year so I would let Lyric out in the yard to play as it was almost spring. I noticed he would hang out in one corner of the yard and sit and wait. Lyric rarely sat still so this was odd. I began to watch to see what was going on. To my shock and delight, each day after Lyric sat in his spot for about 10 minutes, that scrawny black cat from a few weeks earlier would leap over the fence and he and Lyric would begin to play. They would wrestle like kittens, chase each other around the yard or just sit in the yard together. The minute I went outside, the black cat would leap back over the fence and would be gone. I began sitting outside quietly reading every day and while the cat wouldn’t come near me and would take off if I approached, he began to tolerate me in the yard. Sometimes I would look outside and the black cat would be sleeping in the bushes or waiting for Lyric to come out and play. He needed a home.
It took 12 long weeks of putting out food morning and night but eventually, he decided to trust me. I named him Nomad and I just know Lyric convinced him to stay. Within a very short period of time, the cat that once wouldn’t let me get near him became a nightly fixture in my lap and turned out to be a major snuggler who loves his belly rubbed. He and Lyric still play together every day.
