River and Whylie are not my first adopted animals (I have 2 cats who were also adopted) but they were my husband's. He was VERY hesitant to get shelter dogs when we decided to get a dog, but I was adamant that we would NOT get a dog unless it was from a shelter. He relented (he really wanted a dog!) and so we got River. River was actually the dog that Jason forgot about... it was me who said "we forgot about this guy...let's take a look!" From the first day we had him, Jason was head-over-heels - in fact, he got on board for my "shelter only" policy. 9 months later we wanted another dog and again went to the humane society, where we found Whylie. Again, Jason was hesitant... Whylie knew all his basic commands and Jason was convinced that he knew them wrong and would have to be re-trained. Whylie is such a cool dog.... no "re-training" necessary. Now Whylie's become "his" dog, and River is "my" dog... but they are definitely brothers in every sense of the word. Now neither my husband or myself can imagine life without these wonderful wonderful animals... They truly make life worth living.
