We adopted Russ, a choc lab from Lab rescue here in Oklahoma. He was 6 years old, the same age as my son. I fell in love with him at first sight and Russ loved us. He fit right in and it was as if he had always been a part of our family. He really developed a close relationship with me, followed me everywhere, waited at the door for me, slept next to my bed. Russ loved everyone else, but I was the one who rescued him. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to go through chemo and radiation. On the days when I would come home from treatments and go straight to bed, Russ never left my side. Something about seeing him and petting him really lifted my spirits. This time he rescued me.
Not too long ago, we went on vacation and left the dogs in the care of a close relative. We returned a week later and Russ was so happy to see us. That night he was having some problems breathing and couldn't get up. After meds and a call to the vet, we waited for Russ to get better like he always does, but he died later the next night at the age of 14. My husband said he waited for us to get home to say goodbye. Thank you Russ for gracing us with your presence. We love and miss you so much!
