How could anyone dump such a beautiful dog? Eight years ago, a man pulled out a young sheltie/border collie mix from his truck, gave him a kick and took off. A neighbor saw it and took the terrified animal to the shelter.

A few months before, I had said goodbye to my senior dog and was finally ready to give my heart to a new companion. I saw Copper's photo on the shelter's website, and it was love at first sight. But when I called, I was told he had escaped from his cage and was hanging out nearby in the desert. It took a few days before he was finally snared, returned to safety, and I adopted him. Because of his escape act, I named him Copperfield after the magician. Copper was especially scared of men, but he slowly warmed up to my adult sons and, later, to my new husband.

Now, eight years later, Copper is still wary -- but no longer terrified -- of unfamiliar men. He is playful, healthy, and smart. When walking, everyone notes how beautiful he is. Copper has been my cuddle-bug through some difficult times, and stays close to protect me from the unknown. I'm glad I made room for this special guy in my life!
