As I stepped into her office at work my friend Angela asked me if I wanted a dog. Her dad's neighbor had a Rottweiler Coon Hound cross that she wanted to find a new home for. The neighbor was threatening to shoot it because the dog supposedly jumped fences and ran. I hadn't had a dog for a few years and wasn't really looking for one but a little voice inside me said "do it" so that Saturday morning Angela turned up on my doorstep with this skinny, scared, carsick 5 year old dog with the most soulful eyes and the world's softest ears. It took me about 5 minutes to decide that RJ had to stay and it was probably the best choice I have ever made! She was the absolutely perfect dog for me. And my worries about the cats were completely unfounded -- they became her pack and loved her in return and even shared her bed. And who couldn't love this dog? She had so much personality and was well-behaved, mellow, affectionate, funny and she never tried to jump the fence or run away from me. She had a docked tail and when she wagged her stump her whole back-end wagged too. She lived for "walk walks" and the minute I came in the door she started prancing, and wiggling with excitement. She had this hysterical whining/barking/howling vocalization that made me laugh every time. If she wasn't getting enough attention she would lay there and groan pathetically until I acknowledged her. And when I petted her she would lean against me and wrap one leg around mine trying to get as close as possible. To this day I can't imagine why those people hated her so much. All I know is fate put RJ and I together and she was my best friend and angel pup.
It was one year ago today that she crossed the rainbow bridge and I still miss her so much. Thank you RJ for seven years of love and dog kisses and walks and for being my sweet puppy-toes.
