Chemotherapy may be safe for pregnant women, study shows

Recent studies have shown that chemotherapy can be extremely toxic to tumors, but it may not harm an unborn baby, according to ABC News.

Zoila Leiva was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 4 and a half months pregnant with twins. One doctor would not treat her, but another followed recent research, which shows that chemotherapy can be safe during the second and third trimesters, the media outlet reports.

"Pregnant patients are warriors," Dr. Jane Kakkis, Leiva's surgical oncologist and medical director of breast surgery at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, told the news source. "Most pregnant women are more concerned about their child's life, but they also want to be around to care for their baby."

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer. However, the death rate has been decreasing since 1990 due to advancements in research and breakthrough breast cancer news. There are currently 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in United States.
