Doctor awarded grant to study link between obesity and breast cancer

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation recently announced that Dr. Andrew J. Dannenberg of Weill Cornell Medical College will be awarded a grant to conduct his proposed research through the Bloomingdale's annual Pink Campaign. He will be studying the link between obesity, inflammation and breast cancer.

"If left unchecked over long periods of time, inflammation can predispose people to a variety of illnesses, including breast cancer," said Dannenberg. "Understanding the specific ways inflammation works on a molecular level will help us develop better and safer ways to prevent and treat the disease. I am grateful to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Bloomingdale's for their support."

The ultimate goal of the study is to develop behavioral, dietary or pharmacological approaches to decreasing the risk of breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, this disease is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women behind lung cancer. However, the death rate has been decreasing since 1990 due to advancements in research and breakthrough breast cancer news. There are currently 2.5 million survivors in the U.S.
