Politicians don pink aprons at Washington bake sale for breast cancer awareness

The debate in Washington over how frequently breast cancer screenings, such as mammograms, should be recommended has been waging for weeks.

In response to the Department of Health's decision to limit screenings to women who are 50 and older, many Democrats tied on pink aprons and staged a bake sale to raise money for breast cancer screenings yesterday morning, before a hearing on the issue later in the day, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The event was meant to draw attention to enrollment freezes placed on state programs that provide free breast cancer screenings to women who cannot afford a mammogram, the news source reports.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women in their 20s and 30s begin receiving breast cancer screenings as part of a periodic health exam, and that those over the age of 40 have a mammogram annually.
