Provide food and medical care for dogs rescued from the meat trade.

Every year, thousands of dogs in Thailand are stolen in the night, packed into trucks, and driven across Laos to Vietnam to be sold for meat to markets and restaurants. Many are treasured family pets rather than strays. Not only is this practice illegal, the way the smugglers treat the dogs is unthinkably cruel.

There is some good news to share. As publicity and opposition to the practice grow in Thailand, where the majority of people do not eat dog meat, the government is taking notice. Many illegal dog shipments have been confiscated before they can cross the border. But the department of livestock, tasked with responsibility for the recovered dogs, has neither budget nor experience in caring for large numbers of dogs. The livestock centers where the rescued dogs are housed are overcrowded, and lack food and veterinary assistance.

Soi Dog Foundation is working hard to make a real difference for these dogs. They are providing vital resources, including dog food, medications, vaccinations, and veterinary teams to care for and spay and neuter the dogs.

You can help. Just $12 provides food and medical care for one dog rescued from the illegal meat trade in Thailand for a month.

“Boonrod”

Report from the Field

June 2016

Boonrod (meaning “survivor” in Thai) is a male dog of about a year old. After somebody posted gruesome photos online of dogs being hung and skinned alive, Soi Dog’s Unit of Suppression (WDT), with the aid of a Government internet expert, tracked down the location to a butcher in Chiang Mai.

With the full cooperation of The Royal Thai police, the premises were raided and the owner caught red handed just as he was about to slaughter Boonrod, who was curled up shivering in a small cage, totally helpless, with his legs tied together. At the time of Boonrod’s rescue, the remains of other dogs, along with dog meat, were also found on site.

Government officials at the Chiang Mai Animal Quarantine office have spent time playing and socializing Boonrod, and after just two days, his trust in humans started to return.

The barbaric butcher has been charged under the new Animal Cruelty Law as well as under the Contagious Diseases Act. Thanks to generous donations from you, Boonrod's life was saved and he was given the care needed. Boonrod has now been adopted and is living happily with his new family in Italy!

Soi Dog Foundation is dedicated to reducing the suffering of sick, injured, and abused cats and dogs in Thailand. The organization spays and neuters animals, gives free veterinary care, shelters dogs and cats who are victims of cruelty and abuse, and educates people about animal welfare.
