Once Upon a Time

Blustery wind gales, accompanied by “Rice-Krispies”-like snappling of sleety teensy hail-nuggets, assaulted our front porch. Wicker furniture, evoking sunny summer memories, squeaked forlornly out of sync with Mother Nature’s perturbed, ferocious mood-swings. Motion-lights highlighted confused weather patterns’ scooting planters hither, thither and yon. Pajama-clad, I groggily approached door. Opened it. Viewed, amidst unleashed furor, handsome tabby cat sporting white bib with four matching spats. Huddling. Meowing. Caterwauling. Pleading for shelter, practically upon bended knee. "Welcome, my little friend!” Inside he hustled, suddenly slinking stealthily--prowling about plaid couch’s warmth. Pouncing to leap upon wing chair! Roaming free-range through-out dining room, culminating in discovery of…the kitchen! Friskies! I assigned him crate, small litter box within, for evening’s duration. Lamps switched off, I approached staircase--anxious for warm bed, quilts, sleep. Once again, out-door lights flooded room, interrupting darkness. Déjà vu! From threshold, I peered at petite, lacey, bewhiskered, stubby, shivering girl skittering nervously, avoiding my doorway presence--yet purring, “Got milk?” Positioning bowl beneath bench, I gingerly scooped her into my arms. “Bait” succeeded effortlessly! Two comfortably incarcerated kitty-cats later, I dozed, my waking husband sympathetic upon viewing miniature "mountain lions" front and center stage. Whisked to our veterinarian's--satisfactorily passing blood-work tests--both visitors withstood neuter/spay surgery. Isolde's pricey operation included removal of six embryonic marbles never to be alley-born under spring shrubbery and overpopulating every neighborhood. Dropping by doc’s clinic, how impressive to witness patients’ bonding while healing, cuddling within their mutual cage, nestled together, legs all intertwined. Legendary star-crossed lovers Tristan and Isolde rivaled King Arthur’s and Guinevere’s star status. Ageless classical literature chronicled romance’s endurance, despite all odds. Happily, that earlier epic’s simpler version greets our hearts daily as this unique pair continues embracing, sharing dinner, frolicking, cavorting happily ever.
